BackStory is a public radio show and podcast hosted by Peter Onuf, Ed Ayers, and Brian Balogh. We take a topic and try to find the most interesting stories to help give that topic context through three centuries of American history.

The show is broadcast weekly. Check us out on iTunes, Facebook, or at backstoryradio.org.
On April 1, 1996, Taco Bell took out advertisements in several major newspapers announcing a big purchase - the Liberty Bell! The company was stepping up to help ease the national debt, the ad explained, and the newly purchased national relic would henceforth be known as the "Taco Liberty Bell."
It took a little while for everyone to catch on to the fact that this was a pretty elaborate (not to mention historical) April Fool! Read more about it on Dan Lewis’s "Now I Know" blog. Happy April Fools’ Day!
